Marienhof attended high school in Penza. He came to Moscow in 1918, where he met Sergei Alexandrovich Yesenin the young poet. The two poets became close friends. They lived together from 1918 to 1922. After Marienhof, however, had begun to write his novel without falsehood, which reveals many details of Esenin's life, in 1924 broke off the relationship with Marienhof.
