Anaxagoras of Aegina

Anaxagoras (Greek Ἀναξαγόρας ) of Aegina was a Greek sculptor who worked in the 5th century BC.

He made for the sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia a ten cubits high bronze statue of Zeus, which was aligned according to the report of Pausanias to the east, towards the rising sun. It was built on the occasion of the victory of the Greeks against the Persians in the Battle of Plataea 479 BC and was dedicated to the participants of the battle. On the right side of the pedestal of the statue of the poleis were listed who had participated in the battle. Probably it is a base that has been found during an excavation of William Dörpfeld between the Temple of Zeus and the Buleuterion.

An preserved in the Palatine Anthologia epigram another work of Anaxagoras is known. It was a votive offering, which was donated by a Praxagoras, further details to be named.

In a traditional Laertius Diogenes fragment of art-historical work of Antigonus of Carystus the importance of Anaxagoras is appreciated.
