Amboto ( Spanish, Anboto in Basque ) is a mountain in the province of Vizcaya in the Basque Country, with a height of 1,331 m.

Description

The Amboto is the highest elevation in the mountains of Duranguesado (after the nearby municipality of Durango named). The mountains are commonly referred to as "Little Switzerland " and constitute a part of the National Park Urkiola. The Amboto consists of light gray limestone and includes the remains of coral and shells. The Amboto - rock massif located in the eastern part of the National Park and passes through it from northwest to southeast.

On its south side which is oriented in the direction of the valley of Arrazola, there is a steep ( almost 1000 m ) downhill. The north side is significantly softer in the direction of the Urkiola Pass. From there begin the typical ascent rods on the top. To the east, it forms together with the mountain Izpizte a mountain saddle, which Zabalandi ( 896 m) is called.

Along with the mountain range to the Amboto heard is one of the most characteristic and most famous peaks in the Basque Country.

Myths

The Amboto has always been surrounded by magic and mythology. Legend has it that in a cave near the summit Mari, the " Amboto Lady ", their home has, and it is said that you can see them sit in fine weather at the entrance of the cave and then her pretty, meshes blond hair with a golden comb. Not unusual to see them in the night season as a fireball in the Amboto pass in the direction of other places in the Basque Country, where she also owns homes or to nearby mountain Oiz; depending on where it has then gone, there will be good or bad weather.

Rises

The Amboto can climb from a variety of starting points. To the north, the steep slope ( above 1000 meters) is the Atxondotal. From Urkiola you begin the ascent of the famous sanctuary of St. Anthony (730 m). From Atxartetal there is a long but easy way between the mountain Alluitz (1034 m) and Amboto (1331 m) pass. From Otxandio ( 549 m) or Aramaio (312 m), one runs across the vast and grassy saddle Zabalaundi ( 896 m), from where the Amboto presents its most impressive appearance; there can be the summit climb directly and you can get it past the caves of Amboto Dame.
