Ancher Nelsen

Ancher Nelsen (* October 11, 1904 at Buffalo Lake, Renville County, Minnesota, † November 30, 1992 in Hutchinson, Minnesota ) was an American politician. Between 1959 and 1974 he represented the state of Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was also in 1953 for a short time Lieutenant-Governor of his state.

Career

Ancher Nelsen attended until 1923, the High School in Brownton. Between 1926 and 1935 he was a member of the Board of Education of School District 75. At the same time he also sat in the council of Lynn Township. Full-time Nelsen was working as a farmer. He also began a political career as a member of the Republican Party.

From 1935 to 1949 Nelsen was a member of the Minnesota Senate. In the years 1948 and 1952 he was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions relevant. In 1953 he became vice governor of his home state. From this office he resigned in the same year, because he was appointed to the Board of the Rural Electrification Administration, a federal agency that dealt with the electrification of rural areas. A post he held 1953-1956.

In the congressional elections of 1958, Nelsen was in the second electoral district of Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Joseph Patrick O'Hara on January 3, 1959. After seven elections he remained until 31 December 1974 in Congress. In this time of the peak of the civil rights movement and the war in Vietnam fell.
