The University of Andalas ( Indonesian: Universitas Andalas, in short: Unand ) is a university of the Republic of Indonesia. The UNAND belongs to Padang, the capital of the Indonesian province of Sumatera Barat ( German: West Sumatra ) on the archipelago island of Sumatra. The university bears the name of Andalas, the former name of Sumatra.

History

The university was founded in 1955. On September 13, 1956 its inauguration was carried out by its two founding fathers Vice - President Mohammad Hatta and the Minister of Culture and Education. Initially, the Unand divided into five faculties: Agriculture, teaching, medicine, mathematics and science, as well, as the only relatively local, the law faculty in Padang itself all others were scattered far apart in different settlements. 1961 was born in the provincial capital of the region of Economics. Two years later, also in Padang, the Department of Livestock. The doctrinal faculty was spun off in 1965 under the name IKIP and 1997 Universitas Negeri Padang renamed ( to German: State University of Padang ).

The lesson was a lot of Dutch influence, hence the Dutch title of faculty as Drs or Dra. More recent influences in teaching are predominantly U.S. or Australian coinage.

Location

The campus is in a rural area on the hill Bukit Karamuntiang, which lies 100 m above sea level. Because of this, it is one of the places of refuge prior to the expected flooding from quake, as happened in December 2004 in the province of Aceh by a tsunami. In clear weather from the highest point of the sea can be seen. The high school campus is located in district Limau Manis and covers an area of ​​500 hectares. The distance to Padang is about 12 km.

The majority of faculties is centrally represented on campus. Exceptions to this are the medical school and the polytechnics ( Fachhochschule ) for agriculture.

Architecture

All buildings of the University system similar to large, gray, square -edged or pointed concrete blocks. Spitz -edged roofs are modeled on the traditional Minangkabau architecture. Only the gateway resembles traditional architecture.
