Andechs is a community in the Upper Bavarian district of Starnberg and a place of pilgrimage. Geography

The municipality Andechs is located on a ridge between the Ammersee in the west and the Starnberg Lake in the east. The back was created by glacial deposits between the two main glaciers of the Isar- Loisach glacier, which was responsible for the two tongue Beck lakes and has on its surface structures of terminal moraines. History

Andechs was the seat of Europe's major Counts of Andechs and Duke of Meranien, which became extinct in the direct line in 1248. After a fabled finding of a lost treasure relics of the Counts of Andechs Andechs in 1388 lived as a place of pilgrimage again and experienced a revival. 1455 was the founding of the monastery on the Holy Mountain. Until the secularization, the area was a part of the closed Hofmark Erling.

1803, the monastery was dissolved. The place Erling below the monastery in 1818 an independent municipality. 1850 Andechs Monastery as sinecures for the Abbey of St. Boniface (Munich ) under Ludwig I of Bavaria was newly established.

The municipality was renamed officially in Erling Erling - Andechs on April 30, 1956.

Incorporations

On 1 July 1976, until then independent municipality Machtlfing was incorporated into the municipality Erling - Andechs. On January 1, 1978, added Frieding. On January 2, 1978, just one day later, the community name Erling - Andechs was officially changed to Andechs.

The late Gothic cloister Andechs was remodeled 1751-1755 by Johann Baptist Zimmermann in the style of Rococo.

Carl Orff Festival Andechs, where every year works of Carl Orff are listed in the summer months in the Florian - barn of the monastery of Andechs, are the most important venue, dedicated to the care of Orff's works has committed around the world. Carl Orff is at his request, in a side chapel of the monastery church buried.

The municipal area are the remains of the attachment section Andechs from the early Middle Ages, now an archaeological site.

Economy

The Andechs district Erling is the seat of the Andechs dairy. In Andechs industrial area " Rothfeld " some medium-sized enterprises ( industry, software, craftsmen) are located. The largest employer in the village is the monastery of Andechs with the incorporated brewery and the restaurant industry.

  • Hedwig of Andechs (also: Hedwig of Silesia) ( 1174-1243 ), Duchess of Silesia, saint of the Catholic Church, was born in Andechs.
  • Maurus Friesenegger (1595-1655), abbot of the monastery of Andechs from 1640 to 1655, wrote a diary from the Thirty Years' War.
  • Georg Queri (1879-1919), Bavarian folk poet and writer, was born in the district Frieding.
  • Carl Orff (1895-1982), composer and music teacher, is buried in the monastery of Andechs Abbey.
  • Bert Hölldobler (* 1936), ethologist, evolutionary biologist and ecologist Socio born in the district of Erling.
