Anderl Heckmair

Andreas Heckmair called Anderl ( born October 12, 1906 in Munich, † 1 February 2005 in Oberstdorf ) was a German mountain guide and Alpinist.

Life

Heckmair spent part of his childhood in a Munich orphanage. He was twelve years old when he was on vacation in Switzerland. Yet his love awoke to the mountains.

First, however, made ​​Heckmair a gardening apprenticeship (1920), later ( 1927-1929 ) a special education horticulture technician. During the Great Depression, the late 1920s, he had different jobs to support: eg hut carrier, "wild " leader (that is not an authorized mountain guide ) and held smaller presentations on his tours.

As a climber he mastered extreme walls in the eastern and western Alps, for example, in the Dolomites. He became world famous in July 1938 by the first ascent of the famous Eiger North Wall with his friend Ludwig Vörg and the two Austrians Heinrich Harrer and Fritz Kasparek. The route found by them was later named after him.

During World War II he was also on the Eastern Front. In 1954 he took part in an expedition to the Karakorum in part, then he headed his own expeditions, eg to Africa, the Andes and the Himalayas. Heckmair lived in Oberstdorf, he made his guides but across the Alps. The German Association of Mountain Guides ( VDBS ) was founded in 1969 on his initiative.
