Anders Järryd

Anders Järryd ( born June 13, 1961 in Lidköping ) is a former Swedish tennis player.

Järryd was particularly successful as a doubles player. Together with his doubles partner John Fitzgerald, he won eight doubles tournaments at Grand Slam tournaments. In 1985, he was the singles in the semifinals of Wimbledon, but lost to the eventual champion Boris Becker.

Tennis career

Anders Järryd his tennis career began in 1980. In the shadow of tennis greats Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg he was during the 80 years into one of Sweden's most successful tennis players of all time. His greatest successes came in doubles, where he belonged to the world's elite. In his career Järryd won eight singles and 59 doubles titles ( including eight at Grand Slam tournaments ). He got another 16 times in singles and 32 times in a double in an ATP final. His highest world ranking position he won in the individual with rank 5 (1985 ), in a double he was on 12 August 1985, the number one.

Järryd won his first doubles title at the 1983 French Open. With Hans Simonsson he defeated in the finals Mark Edmondson and Sherwood Stewart. Järryd won the tournament in 1987 and 1991, most recently with John Fitzgerald. In 1987, he won along with Stefan Edberg, the title at the Australian Open and the U.S. Open. In addition Järryd brought with Fitzgerald in 1989 and 1991 the title at Wimbledon. So Anders Järryd was victorious in the years 1987 to 1991 with three of the four Grand Slam tournaments in a double and he is one of the players who have won all Grand Slam tournaments in her career.

His best result as a single player at a Grand Slam tournament Järryd achieved in 1985, when he defeated the eventual champion Boris Becker in the semifinals of Wimbledon.

From 1981 to 1993 Järryd belonged to the Swedish Davis Cup team. He played it a total of 53 games, 33 of them in the double together with Hans Simonsson, Stefan Edberg, Mats Wilander Jan Gunnarsson and Hendrik Holm. Overall, he won 36 matches. From 1983 to 1989 he took part in six World finals from which the Swedish team in 1984 and 1987, emerged as the winner. In the final 1984 Sweden met on the U.S., which they defeated 4-1. Järryd defeated it with Stefan Edberg the then dominant double Peter Fleming / John McEnroe. 1987 defeated Sweden in the World Final India 5-0. In this encounter Järryd played two singles, the first he defeated Vijay Amritraj and Ramesh Krishnan in the second. Later Järryd was captain of the Swedish Davis Cup team.

Player and person

Anders Järryd was impatient as a tennis player and had a "hot " temperament. The result was that many at the beginning harbored doubts on its future as a tennis player. Under coach John -Anders Sjogren, however, he developed into a great player who was successful internationally, both in single as well as double, especially as a world-class player in doubles. His preference for the double was a consequence of the Statute, which established the Swedish Tennis composite in 1981, when several young Swedish players received special training from the former Australian elite player Roy Emerson. Järryds game evolved considerably over the course of the year 1981, when he with the newly formed team SIAB undertook together with Mats Wilander and Joakim Nyström under the direction of Sjögren including a training trip to Australia.

Anders Järryd ended his active career in 1996. He lives with his children in Båstad, Sweden. It helps there in high school and playing tennis, moreover, several weeks a year on the seniors tour.

2005 Järryd was included in the Swedish Tennis Hall of Fame in Båstad. On 1 March 2010, he was officially nominated for induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
