It rises east of Lac des Bois, which is located about 50 km north of Great Bear Lake. It flows in the area between the Coppermine River and the Mackenzie initially to the northwest. The Anderson River offers canoeing athletes and rafters, especially near the Falcon Canyon rapids up to Class III. The river was named after its discoverer, James Anderson, who was employed by the Hudson 's Bay Company.

On the banks of the river mostly black or white pines grow. The last section of the river is located in the treeless tundra of Canada. Similarly, the river is home to many animals.
