Andi Schmid

Andy Schmid is a former Austrian skeleton bob.

Andy Schmid was one of the most successful Skeleton pilots of the 1980s. Together with the Swiss Nico Baracchi he ruled between 1984 and 1988, the Skeleton European Championships. 1984 in Winterberg, 1985 in Sarajevo and in 1986 in St. Moritz in 1988 and in winter mountain behind Alain Wicki he won the vice- European champion. He could win it only once, in 1987 in Sarajevo.

At the World Championships he won in 1990 in Koenigssee silver behind Michael Green Berger and 1991 in Igls behind Christian Auer. 1993 Laplagne he won the world title and was again in 1994 in Altenberg second, this time behind Gregor Stähli.

In the Skeleton story Schmid went into the 1986/87 season as the first overall World Cup winner in skeleton. The following season, he won two of the three races and was again the overall World Cup winner. In the 1988/89 season, he was third in the overall World Cup. 1990/91 he repeated the third place. In 1992, he won a World Cup race in St. Moritz again, as in 1994. With the second place in the overall World Cup behind Christian Auer, he finished after the 1993/94 season of his career. After his playing career, he was the coach of the Austrian Skeleton pilots.
