Andijon ( Андижон ) ( usbek. )

Andijan ( Uzbekistan Andijon [ andiʤɒn ]; Russian Андижан / Andijan ) is a city in eastern Uzbekistan with 318 439 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2005). It is located 475 km east of Tashkent in the Fergana Valley and is the capital and cultural center of the province of Andijan.

History

History

The foundation of the city dates back to the 9th century. Andijon evolved over time into an important trading center on the Silk Road, and was explained in the 15th century, the provincial capital.

In the 18th and 19th centuries it was part of the Khanate of Kokand.

1876 ​​Russian forces took a town. An uprising against the rule of Tsar Nicholas II was bloodily suppressed in 1898.

Modern Times

An earthquake on December 13, 1902 caused severe damage in Andijon. More than 4,000 people died.

The city is the birthplace of the founder of the Mughal Empire Muhammad Babur Khan ( 1483-1530 ). Worth seeing is the in 1989 it was opened in honor of the museum.

In Andijon, the artist Peter Cheban was born in 1952, a painter of romantic realism.

On the evening of May 13, 2005, several hundred people were shot by the military and for the most part of special units of the Interior Ministry during the crackdown on massive unrest. The night before, a prison was stormed by a group of people who liberated many of the approximately 730 detainees at that time prisoners. Economy

Andijon is an industrial center ( electronics, textile, food industry). Nearby cotton is grown and promoted oil and natural gas.
