Andre Berto ( born September 7, 1983 in Miami, Florida ) is a Haitian / American boxer, former WBC champion and former IBF welterweight champion.

Amateur

Berto, who has three brothers and three sisters and punched in about 200 amateur fights, winning in 2001 and 2003, the " National Golden Gloves" and twice the PAL tournament. In 2002 and 2003 he took a second place in the U.S. Championship, respectively.

His biggest amateur success was a third place in the welterweight division at the Amateur World Championships 2003 in Bangkok, he was defeated in the semifinals where the Cubans Lorenzo Aragon on points.

At the U.S. Olympic excretion 2004, he was disqualified when he threw his opponent clinging Juan McPherson to the ground. He subsequently went to Haiti, but retired in the first round of scarce.

Professional

In 2004 he became a professional welterweight and was with his attractive style quickly became popular. Only his defense is criticized by many experts. In September 2007, he won an elimination bout the WBC and IBF organizations against David Estrada and thus secured the right to be able to fight against the title holder of the WBC or IBF. He then defeated the experienced German Michel Trabant prematurely. On 21 June 2008 he fought against the Mexicans Miguel Angel Rodriguez for the vacant title of WBC. Berto won that fight by a technical knockout in the seventh round. He then defended the title successfully against the former world champion Steve Forbes, Luis Collazo, Juan Urango, Carlos Quintana and the previously unbeaten Freddy Hernandez total of five times. On April 16, 2011, he lost the belt after one defeat to Victor Ortiz. But on September 3, 2011, he defeated the reigning IBF World Champion Dejan Zavec by TKO in round 5, added the Slovenes to the first premature defeat and is thus world champion again.

In the fight for the WBC world Interime on November 24, 2012 in California, but he was defeated Robert Guerrero on points. On 27 July 2013, losing to the Mexican Jesús Soto Karass for the first time by co in the twelfth round.
