André Godard

André Godard ( born January 21, 1881 in Chaumont, † July 31, 1965 in Paris) was a French architect, archaeologist and art historian. He was also director of the Iranian Archeological Service ( IAS) ( Edāreh -ye kol -e ' atiqāt ).

Life

After absolvence the École nationale supérieure des beaux -arts de Paris André Godard studied archeology of the Middle East, where he specialized mainly on Iran. It was followed by a collaboration with Ernst Herzfeld and Henri Viollet in Iraq ( Samarra ) and Egypt.

After the First World War, married Godard Yedda Reuilly (1889-1979), had studied the oriental languages ​​, and took part in 1922 in a French archaeological delegation in Afghanistan. There he devoted himself to the study of the Buddha statues of Bamiyan. 1925 was followed by an exhibition to this Buddhist pilgrimage site in the Musée Guimet.

From 1928 to 1953, from 1956 to 1960 was André Godard Director of the Iranian Archeological Service ( IAS). This was established by Reza Shah, after the French monopoly had expired on archaeological investigations in Iran. During that time, Godard designed the Bastan Museum ( Museh -ye Irān -e Bastan ( Museum of Iran of antiquity ) ), which he also initiated later.

In collaboration with other architects followed the restoration and the design of several important buildings, including the Institute of Fine Arts of Tehran University, whose curriculum he developed later as dean, modeled on the French École des Beaux -Arts.

After his return to France in 1960, Godard wrote the book L'Art de l' Iran, in which he the development of Iranian architecture - focus of his research - showed.
