André Marchand (painter)

André Marchand ( born February 10, 1907 in Aix -en- Provence, † 1998) was a French painter, illustrator, stage designer and tapestry designer. Marchand began at the age of 13 years to paint despite the categorical rejection of his family to make the art into a career. Six years later he went to Paris to follow his talent. He was self-taught and began his work in 1932 exhibit in Paris at the Salon d' Automne and from 1933 at the Salon des Independants. At this time he created starkly realistic paintings and figures in desolate landscapes, such as Les Inconnus ( 1935-6; Paris, Pompidou ). From 1933 to 1937 Marchand led a series of Ingres -influenced drawings and continued with the painting of still life and abstract images later. 1937 Marchand was declared the undisputed winner of the Prix Paul -Guillaume. Marchand's works are exhibited in many major museums of contemporary art.
