André Navarra

André Navarra ( born October 13, 1911 in Biarritz, † July 31, 1988 in Siena) was a French cellist, who coined the great French tradition cello along with Pierre Fournier, Paul Tortelier and Maurice Gendron.

Life

Navarre was born on October 13, 1911 in Biarritz son of a double bass player of Italian descent. The age of nine he entered the class of his teacher Ringeisen in the Conservatory of Toulouse. At the age of 13, he earned the first prize of the Conservatory of Toulouse. In his youth he was regarded as an outstanding middleweight boxer and swimmer. In 1926 he moved to Jules Loeb at the Conservatory of Paris. Here he received the first prize of the Conservatory in Paris at the age of 15 years. Since the year 1927, he spent seven years as a member of the Kretly String Quartet.

In 1933 he joined the Orchestre de l' Opera de Paris and played in concerts of the conductor Walter Straram, next under conductors such as Toscanini, Bruno Walter and Wilhelm Furtwängler. In 1937 he won first prize in the first International Cello Competition in Vienna. As a soloist he was at this time concerts with the orchestras Pasdeloup and Lamoureux. This was followed by their first gigs on French radio, then in Austria, Poland and Italy.

From 1945 he was exclusively solo inter alia, with concerts in London, The Hague, Geneva, Rome and Berlin. 1946 came the first performances of contemporary works that were dedicated to him: Cantilene variée by Tony Aubin. - In 1949 he was appointed as successor to Pierre Fournier professor at the Conservatoire National Superieur in Paris. In 1952 he began his summer courses at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. The beginning of his gramophone records as a soloist dated 1959. He was twice awarded the Grand Prix du Disque. In 1965 he completed his first concert tour of the USA with conductor Charles Münch. Since 1967, he led courses at the Academy of Music in Detmold in its local professor, from 1968 to 1970 also classes at the Royal School of Music in London. In 1969 his first concert tour of the USSR. 1970-1973: Summer courses at the Summer Academy Maurice Ravel in velvet Jean de Luz. From 1973 until his death in Andre Navarra has also served as guest professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

Navarre died on 31 July 1988 at the age of 76 years. He coined many students, including Florian Kitt, Tadao Kataoka, Valentin Erben, Goritzki, Friedrich Sell Home, Tobias Kühne, Alexander Baillie, Roel Dieltiens, Martin Ostertag, Bernhard Gmelin, Walter Nothas, Rudolf Gleissner Michael Veit, Marcio Carneiro, François Guye, Heinrich Schiff and Christophe Coin.
