He arrived with an advance party of French knights under King James of Avesnes, Count Robert II of Dreux, Bishop of Beauvais and his brother Philip, Count Erard II of Brienne, in September 1189 the Holy Land, directly to the siege of Acre. Shortly after them yet met a German contingent under the leadership of the Landgrave Ludwig III. of Thuringia to do so.

Andreas came here before even up to Saladin's tent. However, the ranks of the Crusaders broke on it, which began to plunder the camp. This opportunity Saladin took advantage to lead his newly formed army against the Franks and turn to beat this now on the run. Most knights managed to escape behind the safe walls of their camp, which was defended by James of Avesnes and Geoffrey of Lusignan.
