André Prévost (composer)

Joseph Gaston Charles André Prévost ( born July 30, 1934 in Hawkesbury, Ontario, † January 27, 2001 in Montreal) was a Canadian composer.

The great-grandson of the composer Gustave Smith studied from 1951 at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec in Isabelle Delorme, Papineau - Couture, and Clermont Pépin. In 1959 he won the Sarah Fischer Composition Prize, and as a bassoonist Wind Trios art the chamber music prize of the Amis de l' Foundation. With grants from the Canada Council and the Government of Quebec he went to Paris, where he studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Olivier Messiaen and at the Ecole Normale at Henri Dutilleux.

Starting in 1962, taught at the Séminaire de Joliette Prévost and the Collège des Eudistes in Rosemont. In 1963 he was awarded a Prix d'Europe and studied in the summer of 1964 electronic music with Michel Phillipot the ORTF in Paris. From 1964, he worked on behalf of the Canadian Ministry of Culture to a musical work on the subject of Man and His World for Expo 67 The work for large orchestra, three choirs and two speakers after a poem by Michèle Lalonde was on 29 April 1967 Pierre Hétu premiered.

From 1964 to 1996 Prévost taught at the Faculty of Music of the University of Montreal. In 1965, he worked at Tanglewood with Gunther Schuller, Donald Martino, Aaron Copland and Zoltán Kodály at the Berkshire Music Center. During a stay in Switzerland (1972 and 1973 ) produced two works commissioned by the CBC: the Missa de Profundis ( which premiered in 1973) and the choreography I, which was premiered by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1975.

Cantate pour cordes Prévost, commissioned by Yehudi Menuhin in 1987, premiered by the Orchestre Camerata Lysy Gstaad of under Menuhin's lead at the Guelph Spring Festival. The creation of the work was supported by the CBC in 1990 in the show Menuhin - documented Prévost, a creative adventure.
