Andrea Carrea

Andrea " Sandrino " Carrea ( born August 14, 1924 in Gavi, † January 13, 2013 in Cassano Spinola ) was an Italian professional cyclist.

From 1940 was Andrea Carrea, professional masons and Fuhrmann, active as an amateur and drove in the national team's successful SIOF di Pozzolo Formigaro. From 1943 to 1945 he was imprisoned in Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. After the Second World War he won several amateur races like Milan - Tortona. His hometown Cassana Spinola is just a few kilometers from the Coppi family away. When he, as a mason working at the brother of Fausto Coppi Serse, this became aware of him.

From 1949 to 1958 Carrea was professional. He was very tall and strong and had a huge hook nose. It was during his entire career in cycling fedelissimo (Italian = faithful ) Gregario Coppi, together with Ettore Milano. At the Tour de France 1952, he went to the ninth stage from Mulhouse to Lausanne in a breakaway group with the later stage winner Walter Diggelmann and found himself unexpectedly as the yellow jersey again. He learned the news only when he was already at the hotel in the bathtub, and the blind masseur Biagio Cavanna and other riders were jostling in the bathroom, to congratulate him. However Carrea burst into tears and insisted: "I really did not want to .... " It was only when he Coppi personally assured that he had earned the yellow jersey and he also congratulated Carrea calmed down. In the overall standings of the Tour he eventually finished ninth.

The UCI Road World Championships 1954 in Solingen Carrea was eleventh. He started eight times at the Giro d' Italia twice and the Tour de France (1951 and 1952). However, further success failed to win.

An Italian singer, who himself had been times cyclist, composed the song Un giorno, per un giorno, vorrei essere Carrea (Italian = a day for one day, I want to be Carrea ).
