Andrea Scherney

Andrea Scherney ( born August 26, 1966 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian track and field athlete and three-time gold medal winner at the Paralympic Summer Games in Beijing in 2008.

She's sporting director of the Austrian Paralympic Committee and a lecturer at the sports university and the Sports Academy in Vienna. After gold medals at the Summer Paralympics in Atlanta in 1996 in the javelin and 2004 in Athens in the long jump, she succeeded again in 2008 to win a gold medal. With a jump of 4.82 meters, she won in the category of lower leg amputee.

The amputation below the left knee became necessary when she suffered a motorcycle accident at the age of 20 years. At this time she was already studying Sport and lost by their disability but only one semester. After they had overcome some bureaucratic hurdles, she was the first disabled sport student in Austria.

The married since 2007 athlete ended her athletic career after the 2008 Paralympics.

Andrea Scherney lives in Gars am Kamp, where a street is named after her.
