Andreanof Islands

The Andreanof Islands are a group of islands of the Aleutian Islands in southwest Alaska (USA). They lie between the Council of Iceland in the west and the Islands of Four Mountains in the east. On the islands are more frequent earthquake with a magnitude up to over 5 on the Richter scale.

Geography

The east- west extent of the islands is 440 km. The total land area of all islands, including the group of Delarof Islands, is 3925 km ². According to the census of 2000, 412 people live on the islands, most of them in the town of Adak on Adak Iceland.

The Delarof Islands, a subgroup of the Andreanof Islands, form the western part. The largest islands are, from west to east, Gareloi Iceland, Iceland Tanaga, Kanaga Iceland, Iceland Adak, Kagalaska Iceland, Great Sitkin Iceland, Atka Iceland, Iceland Amlia and Seguam Iceland. The islands are mostly foggy and, because of the constant wind, treeless.

History

The group in 1761 after the Russian navigator Andreian Tolstyk, one of the first explorers of the islands named. They were in the Second World War, of great strategic importance, therefore, several U.S. military bases there have been created. These were expanded after the war, but closed in 1995.

Earthquake

On March 9 1957, 14:22:31 UTC, an earthquake of magnitude here 8.6 on the Richter scale occurred. Previously, the strength was given as 9.1, so you can find this value in many older statistics. This great quake destroyed two bridges on Adak Iceland, damaged homes, and left behind a 4.5 m wide column on a road. This tsunami ran on to Hawaii, where he destroyed two villages on Oahu and Kauai. The tsunami also caused minor damage in the San Diego Bay in California.

More than 300 aftershocks were from the southern part of the Aleutian Islands from Unimak Pass to Amchitka to Iceland, a strait between Andreanof and Islands Council, reported. Below on March 12 at 11:45 UTC an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 on the Richter scale, was felt at Adak Iceland and on Umnak. On March 14 at 14:48 UTC an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 and occurred on March 16 at 02:34 UTC a magnitude of 7.0, both of which have been felt on Adak Iceland.
