Andreas Angelus

Andreas Angelus ( German Andreas Engel, * November 16, 1561 in Strausberg, † August 9, 1598 in Strausberg ) was a minister, inspector and chronicler of the history of the Mark Brandenburg.

Life

Born the son of the alderman Gregory Engels in Strausberg, he was enrolled at the age of 12 years at the Brandenburg University in Frankfurt an der Oder. His family died around the year 1575 of the plague. Then he left the Mark Brandenburg and is attested in 1577 as a student of Marie Stiftsgymnasium in Szczecin. Later, he lived for some time in Holstein and there wrote a chronicle Holstein. Around the year 1580 he has, according to the sources again in the Mark Brandenburg in offices in the school system tangible. He was rector in Strausberg, Brandenburg Conrektor but works from this period in the Grey Abbey to Berlin as a teacher. On September 14 of the year 1592, he married Sabina, the eldest daughter of Jacob Colerus provost of St. Nicholas in Berlin and in the same year pastor in his native city of Strausberg.

From this time he wrote his three works on the history of the Mark Brandenburg. Although these had Latin title, but were completely written in German language. His major work was a comprehensive history of Brandenburg under the working title Marchia. This resulted in the Rerum Marchicarum Breviarum published 1593, this was followed two years later, an expanded version under the title Annales Marchiae Brandenburgicae. Angelus cited in his work printed about 200 and about 20 at that time only handwritten existing works. Angelus himself had planned to publish a three-volume historical work. But the third part was probably burned because of money disputes after his death by his wife. On August 9, 1598, he died of the plague.
