Andreas Gottlieb Hoffmann ( born April 13, 1796 in Welbsleben, † March 16, 1864 in Jena ) was a German Protestant theologian and orientalist.

Life

While still a student took Andreas Gottlieb Hoffmann as a volunteer fighter in the liberation wars of 1813 and took part with a Prussian regiment to Namur. The experience shaped his patriotic enthusiasm liberal and national life.

After the campaign, he studied theology in Halle. There he joined the Corps in 1817 at Teutonia. He lived with Gesenius and learned from him Syriac and Hebrew. As a preacher and student of Knapp, Niemeyer and Wegscheider he stood for the hall 's rationalism and enjoyed high reputation as a student.

Hoffmann received his doctorate in 1820 Dr. phil .. After his habilitation he read in hall as a private oriental languages. In 1823 he refused a professorship at the Albertus University of Königsberg and was an associate professor of theology at the University of Jena.
