Andreas Michalakopoulos

Andreas Michalakopoulos KBE (Greek: Ανδρέας Μιχαλακόπουλος ) (* 1875 or 1876 in Patras, † March 7, 1938 in Athens ) was a Greek politician and former Prime Minister.

Study

After school he began military training at the Military Academy, from which he graduated as valedictorian. At the same time holds a degree in law, he was able to complete by a grant from King George I after the death of his father. Later he completed postgraduate studies at universities in France, Germany and Athens.

Political career

Michalakopoulos was a senior member of the Liberal Party ( comma File Left Heron) and more than twenty years a close associate of its founder Eleftherios Venizelos. His political career began in 1911 with his election as deputies of the National Assembly ( Vouli ton Ellinon ).

1912 he was appointed Minister of Economy. This office he held until 1916 with brief interruptions in the Cabinets of Venizelos and Alexandros Zaimis. In the cabinets he was from 1917 to 1918 and 1920 also Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Defense in 1918.

In 1924 he founded the Party of the conservative liberals ( Syntiritiko Demokratikon comma), which always was able to win only a few seats in parliament in the next elections. October 7, 1924 to June 26, 1925, he finally was himself Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. In this office he was succeeded by General Theodoros Pangalos, who had recently seized power.

In subsequent years, he was still four more times foreign minister in the cabinets of Zaimis ( 1926-1928 ) and Venizelos ( 1929-1932, 1932 and 1933 ). In this role he was a member of the Greek delegation at the negotiations on the Treaty of Sèvres (1920 ) and the Treaty of Lausanne ( 1923). Later, he was next to Venizelos on October 30, 1930 co-signatories of the Treaty of Ankara, the first friendship agreement after the end of the Greco- Turkish War of 1919 to 1922.

During the dictatorship of General Ioannis Metaxas he was under house arrest since 1936 and was also occupied by a political activity prohibition.
