Police officer David Bronstein

The main character in Pitt Jewellers thrillers is the police officer David Bronstein, who has to solve 1913-1938 several criminal cases in the Vienna of the late monarchy and the First Republic. Bronstein comes from an assimilated Jewish family and sees itself as a Protestant. But whether the latent anti-Semitism at that time he is confronted with his background and must, whether he wants to or not, to deal with his family history. His cases it usually resolves with a certain cozy clumsiness ( evident is his penchant for good food, for this is due to time even in critical moments ), but it can, if the situation requires it, be rough and coarse. Nestled Bronstein cases are always in a momentous event for the Austrian history, influence its impact and the respective criminal case. In " Tacheles " (2008) Bronstein unit as part of its investigation into the July Putsch of 1934, " Ezzes " (2009) playing around the Palace of Justice Fire of 1927, while " chutzpah " (2010) is recognized at the time of the proclamation of the Republic in 1918. In the novel " Tinnef " ( 2011) of the Redl affair plays a special role, and " Zores " (2012 ), the end of Austria by the so-called " connection" to the central historical theme.

The remarkable thing about Pitt Jewellers Bronstein pentalogy is the fact that the novels were published, as it contra - chronological order. The author explains this by saying that one must dig deeper and deeper as a historian, to get at the root of a social problem. The downfall of Austria was thus the result of policy mistakes that were made in Austria since the days of the monarchy.

A linguistic feature in Pitt Jewellers " Bronstein " novels, is the extensive use of the Viennese dialect, the author exactly paying attention to bring out the different facets of the local idiom. The driver, janitor or domestic servants just speak in dialect a language other than the officials, officers and bankers. Finally, Pittler outs in his works as a follower of the methods Umberto Eco, because in each novel are numerous small contain references to great works of world literature, which usually puts minor characters in the mouth Pittler. These range from Thomas Bernhard on Christa Wolf to Samuel Beckett.
