Andreas Thiel (bishop)

Andreas Thiel ( born September 28, 1826 in Lokau at Seeburg in a circle Rößel; † July 17, 1908 in women Castle ) was from 1886 to 1908 Bishop of Warmia.

Life

He attended the village school in Lokau and on the advice of his teacher, the Progymnasium in Rößel and high school in Brown Mountain. In Brown Mountain, he studied at the Lyceum Hosianum theology. In 1849 he was ordained a priest.

Following his graduation, he began his teaching career in 1853 as a lecturer at the Academy of Brown Mountain. From 1855 on, Thiel was an associate professor and from 1858 professor of church history and canon law. He founded with others the Historical Society of Warmia and published in the journal Contributions to Warmia cultural history.

In 1870 he was canon and 1871 Vicar General of the Bishop of Warmia. In 1885 he was appointed bishop of Warmia and consecrated in 1886.

As a scientist, he dealt primarily with the earlier history of the Popes and the diocese of Warmia and cultural history.
