Andreï Makine

Andreï Makine ( born September 10, 1957 in Krasnoyarsk, Soviet Union) is a French writer.

Life

Makine grew up in the provincial town of Penza. Since his childhood, he is trusted by his French grandmother with the culture and language of France. However Makine claimed in later interviews to have learned French from a friend, so it is not sure if he actually had a French grandmother. Even as a boy, he writes poetry in Russian and French in his native language. He studied in Moscow and Tver philology and philosophy teaches a short time in Novgorod. In 1987, he comes as part of a teacher exchange program to France. There he decides to stay, granted political asylum and decides to lead a life as a writer in France; since he lives in Paris, initially in very poor circumstances. His first written in French manuscripts - as the first novel Daughter of a Hero (1990 ) - he pretends to be French translations from Russian to dispel the skepticism of the publishing house that has only recently living in France Russian emigre in a second language can write. After disappointing reactions to his first two novels, it takes eight months to find a publisher for his novel The French Testament, with whom he at one stroke becomes famous in 1995. In the same year he becomes the first writer simultaneously the two most prestigious literary prizes in France, the Prix Goncourt and the Prix Médicis. In 1998 he received the Finnish Eeva - Joenpelto Prize and in 2005 for his oeuvre the 15,000 euro Literature Prize of the Foundation Prince Pierre of Monaco.
