Andrej Kmeť

Andrej KMET ( born November 19, 1841 in Bzenica, Slovakia, † February 16, 1908 in Martin, Slovakia) was a Slovak pastor and botanist. His botanical and mycological author abbreviation is " Kmet ".

Life

Andres KMET, the son of a village blacksmith, attended elementary school in Žarnovica and then the school in Banská Štiavnica. In Gran he studied Catholic theology. First chaplain in Senohrad KMET was then pastor in Krnišov (German village Prince ) in Okres Krupina.

He also dealt with other subjects such as ethnography or archeology. Even as a student he collected Christmas folk songs. For the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873, he organized, for example, an exhibition of embroideries from the county Hont.

KMET but also wrote a book on economics. This was but confiscated by the Hungarian authorities in 1875. After the rose growers and the Pink Kmetiana is named.

In his research on the 1009 m N.M. high mountain Sitno in the mountains Selmec KMET described 23 new species of plants and " sponges ". The Herbarium at the Slovak National Museum, which consists of 72,000 pieces, was founded by him. As chairman of the Slovak Museum Society, he acquired great contributions to the preservation of antiquities in Slovakia.

But his international contacts, he also took a national recognition of the Slovak people.

Appreciation

In honor KMET numerous monuments in Slovakia have been established. But his achievements were also recognized differently. In Martin, the museum Andrej KMET is as part of the Slovak National Museum. In 2008, a coin worth 200 SKK ( € 6.64 ) was launched.

Furthermore, it was renamed in 1948 the municipality Dorok in Okres Nové Zámky after Kmeťovo.
