Andrej Sekera

Andrej Sekera ( born June 8, 1986 in Bojnice, Czechoslovakia) is a Slovak ice hockey player who plays since June 2013 at the Carolina Hurricanes on the position of the defender.

Career

Andrej Sekera began his career in the youth teams of HC Dukla Trenčín, for whom he played until 2004 in the junior leagues Slovakia. In the 2003 /04 season he also made ​​his debut in the Slovak Extraliga for Trenčín. During the NHL Entry Draft in 2004, he was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the third round at a total of 71 point and then moved in the summer of 2004 on the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League.

It was followed by two very successful years in the OHL for Sekera, in which he was the All- Rookie team and appointed in 2006 to the All- Star team in 2005. In addition, he was awarded the Max Kaminsky Trophy, which is awarded to the outstanding defender of the OHL. In July 2006, Sekera signed his first contract with the Buffalo Sabres, which binds him three years to the franchise. The season 2006/ 07 he graduated from the farm team of the Sabres, the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League. He also made ​​his NHL debut with the Sabres, but came just two NHL games. In the following season always fell defender of the Sabres from an injury, so that Sekera was appointed regularly in the NHL squad and has been used in a total of 37 games of the season. His first NHL goal he scored on 28 November 2007 against the goalkeeper of the St. Louis Blues, Manny Legace. For the 2008/09 season Sekera received after the disposal of other defender a regular place in the defense of the Sabres.

End of June 2013 Sekera was transferred in exchange for Jamie McBain and a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 2013 to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Andrej Sekera represented the Slovak junior national team in three World Cups. 2004, 2005 and 2006 In 2006, he led the youth team of Slovakia as team captain.
