Andrejs Pumpurs

Andrejs Pumpurs (born 10 Septemberjul / September 22 1841greg in Courland part of the former municipality Lieljumprava, today Birzgale in Latvia, .. .. † 23 Junijul / July 6 1902greg in Riga ) was a Latvian poet. He wrote the Latvian national epic Lāčplēsis down ( The Bear Slayer ) and was a major figure in the political and literary movement Young Latvians.

Pumpurs grew on the banks of the Daugava ( lett: Daugava) on. He was one of three children from the community who were selected by the Lutheran clergy for the German class of the church school in Lielvārde. After that he could not continue his education due to poverty his family. He worked as a rafter and performed with his father doing odd jobs. He came up with the oral tradition of Latvian history and legends in contact, which is particularly widespread in the area of his birthplace and should characterize his later work. His first poems and early sketches for the epic he wrote in 1867-1872 Vecpiebalga, a rural center of the Latvian education and cultural life.

After a brief stay in Riga, he went to Moscow in 1876 and was presented by the Slavophiles Ivan Sergeyevich Fricis Brīvzemnieks Aksakow and the publisher Mikhail Katkov Nikiforowitsch. His military career took him later to Sevastopol and Odessa, where he received officer training. In 1882 he went back to the province of Livonia. From 1895 on, he worked as a quartermaster in Dvinsk ( lett: Daugavpils ). In order to supply the Russian troops, he traveled widely, following one of these trips to China, he died of rheumatism.

Literary work

The first poem Pumpurs was published in the journal " Baltijas Vēstnesis " 1869. His most famous work, the epic " Lāčplēsis " was released in 1895 for the 3rd Latvian Song Festival. 1895 his collected works were under the title "No Daugava līdz Donavai " published ( From the Dvina to the Danube ). As part of the Lāčplēsis Day 1988, a German translation of the linear Lāčplēsis Gunārs Cīrulis was published by the Writers' Union of the Latvian SSR.
