Andres Tarand

Andres Tarand (born 11 January 1940 in Tallinn) is an Estonian politician. He was from 1994 to 1995 Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia and is currently a member of the European Parliament.

Scientist

Andres Tarand graduated in 1963 his study of climatology at the University of Tartu. In 1973 he made ​​a second degree in geography. He was from 1968 to 1988 worked as a research assistant at the University of Tartu. From 1988 to 1990 he was director of the Botanical Garden of the University. He sat down in the period of perestroika deeply committed to environmental concerns and a detachment of Estonia by the Soviet Union.

Estonian policy

Since 1996, Andres Tarand belongs to the Social Democratic Party Mõõdukad, which has renamed Rahvaerakond Mõõdukad and 2004 in Estonian Social Democratic Party in 1999. From 1996 to 2001 Tarand was party chairman. In 2004 he was selected for the Estonian Social Democrats in the European Parliament.
