He currently plays for the Crusaders in the Super 14 and for Canterbury in provincial rugby. Ellis had the honor of being nominated for the New Zealand U21. In his first year in the Super 14, he pushed the All Black Kevin Senio from the grid of the Crusaders. Ellis could not play in the Super 14 final in 2006, he self-inflicted injury in the semi-final against the Bulls. Ellis could therefore not be nominated for the June internationals the All Blacks.

Because of its position as a halfback and his long blond hair, he was in his early days often compared with former New Zealand national team and Canterbury halfback Justin Marshall. Ellis was a surprising nomination for the 2007 World Cup, which was announced on July 22, 2007. He was preferred to the Wellington halfback Piri Weepu.
