Andrew Gurr

Andrew John Gurr ( born December 23, 1936) is a British Shakespeare scholar.

Life and work

Gurr was born in Leicester and grew up in New Zealand. He studied at the University of Auckland and at Cambridge University. At the universities of Wellington, Leeds and Nairobi, he has taught in the period 1969-1973. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor at the University of Reading. In the early 80s Gurr co-authored with Claire Hanson a study of Katherine Mansfield and two works of African literature. He then turned to the works of Shakespeare, the study of Renaissance drama and the Elizabethan theater practice. Gurr were individual pieces out Shakespeare (Henry V, Richard II) and edited works of John Fletcher. The construction of the Globe Theatre was conducted scientifically by him. He was also a consultant for the reconstruction of the " Blackfriars Playhouse" in Staunton ( Virginia). In the period from 1988 to 1998 he was the editor of the journal Modern Language Review.
