Andrew Holness

Andrew Holness ( born July 22, 1972 in Spanish Town, St. Catherine) is a Jamaican politician of the Jamaica Labour Party ( JLP ). He was on 23 October 2011 to January 5, 2012 Prime Minister of Jamaica.

Life

Holness visited until 1988, the St. Catherine High School and then studied at the University of the West Indies, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Management Studies and a Master in Development Studies ( Development Studies ). From 1994 to 1996 he served as executive director of the Voluntary Organization for Uplifting Children. In 1996 he went to the Premium Group of Companies, where he was Special Assistant to Edward Seaga.

Holness is married and has two children.

Policy

In the parliamentary election 1997 Holness was chosen as the candidate of the Jamaica Labour Party in the constituency of West Central St. Andrew House of Representatives since he heard without interruptions to the Jamaican Parliament. From 1999 to 2002 he was opposition spokesman for Agriculture and Development, in the meantime, he was flat spokesman for the JLP, in 2005, he was opposition spokesman for education policy.

After the JLP won the government majority in the parliamentary elections in September 2007, Holness was sworn in on September 14, as Minister of Education.

After Bruce Golding end of September 2011 announced to resign from his position as party leader of the JLP and prime minister of Jamaica, a group of JLP parliamentarians, among whom were the other potential successor, Holness said in early October for their assistance in succession Goldings. Holness was sworn in as the ninth Prime Minister of Jamaica on October 23 and also elected at the party convention November 20, 2011, as expected, to Golding's successor as party leader. On December 4, Holness announced, as demanded by the opposition People's National Party (PNP ) on the occasion of the leadership transition, new elections for December 29, 2011. The PNP won the election with 42 seats against 21 for the JLP, new Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller was, Holness became opposition leader in the House of Representatives.
