Andrew I of Hungary

Andreas I. (Hungarian András I. ) (* 1015, † 1060 ), son of Vazul from the dynasty of Árpád, was from 1047 until shortly before his death, King of Hungary.

After a period of throne struggles that followed the death of Stephen I. ( 1038 ), came after the death of Peter Orseolos with Andreas again Arpade to the Hungarian throne. Under Sámuel Abas rule Andreas and his brother Levente had previously been banished from Hungary and had found refuge in the Kievan Rus. When they returned from there in 1046 to Hungary, the pagan and the Christian Levente baptized Andreas initially supported the pagan circles, who had won the throne during the turmoil of influence. After Andreas was crowned king in 1047 and had his rule strengthened by military successes, but he drove forward again to Christianity.

Also known as Hungarian King Andreas remained close with his former exile, the Kievan Rus, connected. He married a daughter of the Kiev Great Prince Yaroslav.

The relationship to the Empire remained tense: 1051 and 1052 undertook Henry III. two largely unsuccessful campaigns against Hungary. Andreas joined forces in 1053 with Konrad I of Bavaria and so supported the opposition against the Emperor.

1057 tried to settle his succession by his five year old son was crowned as King Solomon Andreas. However, this could not initially take up his inheritance, as Béla I. Andreas crashed and took the throne.

Andreas and his family are buried at Lake Balaton in Tihany abbey church.
