Andrew Streitwieser

Andrew Streitwieser (* June 23, 1927 in Buffalo (New York)) is an American chemist ( Physical Organic Chemistry, Quantum Chemistry ).

Streitwieser studied at Columbia University with a bachelor's degree in 1948 ( Columbia College ), the master's degree in 1950 and his doctorate in 1952 with William von Eggers Doering. As a post - graduate student, he worked for John D. Roberts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1952 he was instructor and later professor at the University of California, Berkeley. 1964/65 he was there Miller Institute Research Professor. In 1993 he retired.

He was one of the pioneers of molecular orbital theory and wrote a textbook as well as a well-known textbook of organic chemistry.

In 2009 he was awarded the Roger Adams Award, 1982 James Flack Norris Award, in 1964 the price of the American Chemical Society (California Section), 1967 American Chemical Society Award in Petroleum Chemistry and 1993, the Berkeley Citation. In 2009 he became a Fellow of the American Chemical Society.

He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1969 ), the American Association for the Advancement of Science ( 1978) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1977). He is also a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences ( 1993). 1958 to 1962 he was a Sloan Fellow, Guggenheim Fellow in 1969 and 1989 Arthur C. Cope Scholar. In 1976 he received the Humboldt Research Award, with which he was at the TU Munich. In 1967 he was awarded the George A. Olah Award in Hydrocarbon or Petroleum Chemistry.

1989 to 1997 he was Associate Editor of the Journal of Organic Chemistry.
