Andrew Ure

Andrew Ure ( born May 18, 1778 in Glasgow, † January 2, 1857 in London ) was a British physician and professor of natural history and chemistry.

Life

Andrew Ure received his education at the grammar school in Glasgow. He then studied at the University of Edinburgh in chemistry and medicine. 1800 " he had the medical doctor dignity " acquired and settled in Glasgow as a physician. In 1805 he was appointed professor of natural history and chemistry at the Andersonian institution. Ure worked for some years with astronomical studies and is regarded as the founder of 1808 opened the observatory. Then he devoted himself mainly physical work and the application of chemical processes in industry / on the system of manufacturing and published his findings. His focus was research on the elasticity and the latent heat of vapors of various liquids.

A stir he caused when he reported on his experiments at the corpse of the executed murderer Clydsdale. Ure had by electrical stimulation can contract the muscles of the body and thus, inter alia, allegedly frightening facial expressions caused (see Luigi Galvani's frog leg experiments). Ure put forward the theory that under certain conditions corpses could be revived.

Ures attempts are regarded as one of the possible inspirations for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

From 1830 he lived in London, where he died on January 2, 1857.
