Andrew Yao, Chinese: Yao Chi -Chih (Chinese姚 期 智, Pinyin Yao Qizhi; born 24 December 1946 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese-American computer scientist. For his research in the field of theoretical computer science, especially in complexity theory, he received the Turing Award in 2000.

Life

Yao graduated in Physics at the National Taiwan University, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1967. After military service in the Taiwanese Air Force, he moved to Harvard University, where he received his master's degree in 1969, Ph.D. 1972 in physics. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1975 and earned a second Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Illinois.

In 1975 he was a visiting scientist at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center, 1975-1976 Assistant Professor at the Mathematics Department of MIT, then to 1981. At the computer science faculty at Stanford University As a professor of computer science Yao was at the University of California, Berkeley (1981-1982), Stanford University (1982-1986) and Princeton University (1986-2004) worked. Since 2004 he teaches at Tsinghua University, Beijing, since 2005 he is also Distinguished Professor -at -Large at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

He was also in 1978 and 1991 at Bell Laboratories, 1979 at Xerox PARC, 1980, 1981 and 1982-1983, with interruptions at the IBM Almaden Research Center, 1986 Advisor to the DEC Systems Research Center, and since 2003 has been at Microsoft Research Asia. 1980 to 1981 he was in the academic council of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and 1994-1996 Vice- rector of the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science.

In 1982 he formulated the millionaire problem, and thus laid the foundation for multi- party computation. His research interests include analysis of algorithms, complexity and communication complexity theory, cryptographic protocols and quantum computer science.

In 2005 he published with colleagues a collision attack on SHA-1.
