Andrey Korotayev

Andrei Vitalyevich Karataiev (Russian: Андрей Витальевич Коротаев; born February 17, 1961 in Moscow ) is a Russian Orientalist, anthropologist, historian and economist. He is director of the Moscow Center of Anthropology of the East. In 2003 and 2004 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study.

Life and research

His research focuses on four problem areas: He is concerned with the long-term evolution of socio-political systems of the northeastern Yemen, the origins of Islam and the most important trends explored in the development of social systems in southern Arabia. He proved the existence of matrilineal groups in pre-Islamic Arabia.

Another research focus is on cross-cultural studies ( Cross-Cultural Studies). He has made important contributions to the study of the question of the determinants of matrilocality.

He deals with the mathematical modeling of social, economic and historical dynamics ( " Kliodynamik "). His mathematical models describe in detail the long-term political- demographic dynamics of Egypt; this he used to analyze the revolution in Egypt in 2011. Finally, he observes and analyzes the long-term development of global economic momentum ( Kondratieff cycle).

He works in the fields of economics and ethnography, especially in terms of factors of the current demographic crisis in Russia.

In 2012 he received the Gold Medal of the International Kondratieff Foundation.
