Andrey Markov

Andrei Andreyevich Markov (Russian: Андрей Андреевич Марков, scientific transliteration Andrei Markov Andreevič, formerly also transcribed Markoff, * 2 Junijul / June 14 1856greg in Ryazan, .. † July 20, 1922 in Petrograd ) was a Russian mathematician who significant contributions to probability theory and calculus contributed.

Life

Markov was born in Ryazan. He studied 1874-1880 among others Pafnuti Chebyshev in Saint Petersburg. In 1885 he defended his habilitation thesis about some applications of algebraic continued fractions and subsequently became in 1886 associate professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the Imperial University of St. Petersburg. In the same year he became a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

His brother Vladimir Andreevich Markov (1871-1897) was also a mathematician who died young of tuberculosis. An inequality is named after the brothers.

According to him, the astrophysicist Alexander Vladimirovich the Markov Markov lunar crater is named.

Work

Markov is primarily known for the theory of stochastic processes: He averaged 1913, the letter sequences in Russian literature to demonstrate the need for independence of the law of large numbers. The calculations could also be interpreted as a statement about the well-formedness of the orthography of character strings. From this approach, a general statistical tool, called the stochastic Markov process from which can be determined on the basis of current knowledge developed future developments. Today, we find, for example, an application of so-called Hidden Markov Models in the handwriting and voice recognition software. After Markov inter alia, the Markov chains and Markov inequalities are named.
