Andries van Eertvelt

Andries van Eertvelt ( baptized March 25, 1590 in Antwerp, † August 1652 ) was a Flemish painter.

Life

Andries van Eertvelt is considered one of the most important Flemish marine painter of his time. About his education is not known. At least against 1609/10 he freelanced as a champion and is mentioned about a decade as a popular teacher. Near the end of the 20s of the 17th century, starting from his motifs, a longer study stay in Genoa and Naples suspected. From March 1631 he is again documented in Antwerp. Busy is his good relationship with other Flemish painters of his time. From Anthony van Dyck he was portrayed.

Although van Eertvelt trod no new ways, he was a solid master of his craft. His strength was the display of moving and stormy seas in conjunction with detailed painted ships. He was one of the few Flemish painters who tried their hand at this genre and were successful.

From its name, there are numerous variants: Andries van Ertvelt, Andries van Artvelt, Andries van Aertvelt, Andries van Artevelde, Andries van Artevelt. The preferred spelling of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisches Documentatie is Andries van Eertvelt.
