Andrzej Zawada

Maria Andrzej Zawada (* July 16, 1928 in Olsztyn, † August 21, 2000 in Warsaw) was a Polish mountaineer, Tatra mountain climber and studied seismologist. He organized and led numerous Himalayan expeditions and Tatra. He was also the author of many mountain films and books (eg Last attack on the Kunyang Chhish, 1973). He was a grandson of Tomasz Zawada - Rawicz, a participant in the January Uprising of 1863.

Expeditions

1959 Zawada was leader of the first winter crossing of the High Tatras, which lasted 19 days. In 1971 he led the first expedition to the Polish Khunyang chish ( 7852 meters ) in the Karakoram. With Tadeusz Piotrowski he succeeded the first winter ascent of Noshak ( 7492 m) in the Hindu Kush (1973). It was the world's first winter ascent of a summit over 7000 meters. In 1977, Zawada managed the first ascent of the north face of the Koh -i Mandaras ( 6628 m).

Krzysztof Wielicki and Leszek 1980 managed Cichy the first winter ascent of Mount Everest ( 8848 m ), headed by Zawada. In the winter of 1984/85 he was Oyu expedition together with Andrzej Heinrich and Jerzy Kukuczka participants of the Polish Cho. At the turn of 1987/88 he led the first Canadian- Polish winter expedition to K2.
