First band experience gained Fletcher as electric bass player along with his school friend Vince Clarke in the group No Romance in China, the style was based on The Cure. In 1979 he joined the synthesizer and, together with Clarke and Martin Gore, the band Composition of Sound. After Dave Gahan joined as a singer for the band, they changed its name to Depeche Mode.

Fletcher took over in the band rather than creative organizational tasks. He is rumored that he has kept the band together in difficult times and, for example, between Gore and Gahan obtained a compromise, as the matter is quarreling as to who should contribute how many songs to the album Playing the Angel. However, it was because of dispute between him and Alan to a break of Alan Wilder Depeche Mode. Fletcher is often criticized for musically nothing to contribute to the band. This is partly because he is the only member who never wrote a song. In addition, earlier took over Alan Wilder the bulk of the work in the studio. Since Wilder is no longer there, Fletcher is significantly more involved in studio work. He played the bass for example, A Pain That I'm Used To, and The Sinner in Me by Playing the Angel.

In 2002, Fletcher his own record label Toast Hawaii and marketed since the band client. In October 2006, the electro-pop band left the label, however. Because client was the only commercial strip of the label, the future of Toast Hawaii is currently uncertain. Occasionally, Fletcher as a DJ.
