Career

Gray began his career at Leeds United in 1995. There, the midfielder could not prevail under coach George Graham and was awarded to FC Bury in the second-class First Division in 1997. After his return to Leeds he was sold to Nottingham Forest for a fee of £ 175,000 in the summer of 1998.

In Forest, he was initially employed by coach Dave Bassett regularly in the Premier League, but lost his place in the squad in December. After a coaching change, he was awarded in spring 1999 for two months at Preston North End and after his return in late March at Oldham Athletic. From the summer he joined again for the relegated Nottingham Forest against the ball and came regularly used.

After the collapse of the pay- TV rights holder ITV Digital in 2002 Nottingham Forest ran into financial problems and was forced to sell some players. Gray came at League rivals Bradford City, where he was one of the permanent employees. As a result, he played himself in the circle of the Scottish national team and came on 2 April 2003 in the 0-1 defeat against the Lithuanian national selection for his debut in the National Jersey. A month later, he played in the 1-1 Unenetschieden against New Zealand his second and last international match.

In February 2004, Gray moved on to Sheffield United. There could shine for the striker retrained Scot as a regular scorer: After his debut for his new club, a 1-2 defeat against Reading FC, already scored a goal, he scored in the course of his first six series nine goals in 14 games. In the following season he was one of the most prolific players in the second division and scored 15 league goals. After the first season game in the season 2005/ 06, in which he again scored one goal, he left the club and tried his hand at Erstligaaufsteiger Sunderland, who paid £ 1.1 million transfer fee. After an auspicious debut, in which he also met in the Premier League, he became the incorrect purchase, since this should be his only hit. Therefore, it was first borrowed in the second half of Burnley, who signed him permanently in the summer.

In the Football League Championship, Gary was back to the old eye for goal. By November, he scored ten goals this season before a broken foot stopped him. After a brief dry spell after his convalescence he came to a total of 14 goals this season. In January 2008 he was transferred for a fee of about £ 1.5 million to the league rivals Charlton Athletic, where he saw better chances of Premier League promotion.
