Andy Holmes

Andrew ( "Andy" ) Holmes MBE (* October 15, 1959 in London, † October 24, 2010 ) was a British rower.

The London grew Holmes won at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the gold medal in the discipline of four with coxswain. In 1986, he won at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1986 in two different competitions, one hand in the coxless four, on the other hand, in the coxless pairs (along with Steven Redgrave ). In the same year came to Nottingham the world title in two with coxswain added ( with Redgrave and Patrick Sweeney ). Another world title won Holmes, Redgrave and Sweeney, 1987 in Copenhagen.

At the Olympic Summer Games in Seoul in 1988 Holmes won two more medals. He was in the coxless pairs with Redgrave for the second time Olympic champion. In addition, with Sweeney, he took the bronze medal in pairs with coxswain. After this success, Holmes worked as a trainer in France for a year, then retired but, surprisingly for the public, completely from rowing back. Instead, he built up a private moving companies in London.

Andrew Holmes died at the age of 51 years at the infectious disease leptospirosis.
