Andy Irvine (rugby union)

Andrew Robertson "Andy" Irvine MBE ( born September 16, 1951 in Edinburgh ) is a former Scottish rugby union player and current president of the Scottish Association. He is considered one of the best offensive players of all time. He is also a Chartered Surveyor.

Career

Irvine announced on December 16, 1972 his debut for the Scottish national team against the New Zealand All Blacks. This was followed by 50 more missions. He participated in three tours of the British and Irish Lions, in 1974 and 1980 and 1977 to South Africa to New Zealand. The last game as a player, he played on 10 July 1982 Scotland against Australia. The most famous game of his career, he played on 16 February 1980 the Five Nations against France at Murrayfield Stadium. Scotland was 15 minutes before the end of the game also because of missed kicks from Irvine significantly. However, he was able to shoot with two tries and some penal kicks the game, what the French sports newspaper L' Équipe prompting to name the stadium of the Scots " Irvinefield ".

After his playing career, he worked as a coach at Heriot 's RFC, where he was active as a player. Since 2005 he is the President of the Scottish Rugby Union. He was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame and the International Rugby Hall of Fame and was appointed Member of the British Empire.
