Andy Palacio

Andy Palacio ( born December 2, 1960 in Barranco, Toledo District, † January 19, 2008 in Belize City ) was a Belizean musician. His commitment was the preservation of the language and culture of the Garifuna in the form of music.

As a young man Palacio went as an employee of an educational program to Nicaragua. He took back in the home at the Punta Rock which traditional Garifuna music with jazz and rock 'n ' roll connects. In 1987, he learned from a stay in England to professionalize his music. Being Garifuna Collective was an international ensemble that brought together older stars and young talents. The album, published in 2007 Watina made ​​him known internationally and led to the World Music Charts Europe this year. Together with Ivan Duran, he was awarded the WOMEX Award. In addition, Palacio was named a UNESCO ambassador of peace.

Palacio died in January 2008 from the effects of stroke and heart attack. It was still trying to fly him to a clinic in Chicago; because of his hopeless state of health, the project was canceled, however, and Palacio returned to Belize so that he died in his home country.
