Angaur

Angaur (also Ngeaur, Japaneseアンガウル) is a South Pacific island nation of Palau to the associated island and is the same part Palau Angaur State.

The lush, sparsely populated and less than 8 km ² large island facing the southern end of the Palau Islands dar. 2005, there were about 320 people on Angaur, mainly in the main village Ngaramasch (formerly Saipan Town) on the west coast. Just east of Ngaramasch is the second village of the island, Rois. To the northeast lies the abandoned village Gabayanga. Highest peak of 3.9 × 2 km wide island is the 40 m high Ramuldo Hill.

Most important economic activities are agriculture, fisheries, the phosphate mining and tourism. On Angaur next Palauan and English, Japanese is considered to be the official language.

History

1899 Angaur was together with the other Palau Islands for part of the colony of German New Guinea. At the beginning of the First World War, the island was occupied without resistance. On September 26, 1914, the Australian cruiser Sydney arrived. The landing party of the cruiser confiscated only the radio equipment of the German station. This was done in such a hurry that the radio station could be restored fairly by the islanders after deduction of the ship. Was occupied finally Angaur then on October 9, 1914 by Japanese units.

During World War II battle between U.S. and Japanese forces took place on Angaur. From this period dates the two -kilometer-long paved airstrip in the eastern part of the island.

Monkeys Plage

On the island of Angaur there is currently a monkey plague. Numerous alien macaques inhabit the island. About the origin of the monkeys is debated. However, they should come from a single pair of the German colonial era. The macaques have no natural enemies on Angaur.
