Ángel Herrera Oria

Cardinal Ángel Herrera Oria, and Angel Herrera Oria y (born 19 December 1886 in Santander, Cantabria, † July 28, 1968 in Madrid) was a Spanish lawyer, politician and theologian. He was Bishop of Málaga and cardinal of the Roman Church.

Life

Herrera Oria completed his schooling at the Jesuit College of Valladolid and studied law at the University of Salamanca. In 1907 he entered the service of the state attorney and was first added to Burgos. In 1908 he had a leave of absence and left Burgos again to a doctorate at the Central University of Madrid in law. Then he returned to government service.

In 1910 he became the first chairman of the on the suggestion of the Jesuit priest and Ángel Ayala foundation since December 1909 Asociación Católica Nacional de Propagandistas ( ACNP ), dissemination of Catholic positions in public life. In 1911 he founded the newspaper " El Debate " and they issuing Verlag, which he held until 1933 board in 1911 as director. During the Second Republic, he represented a moderately conservative position that does not urged the unconditional restoration of the monarchy. From 1933 to 1936 Herrera Oria was President of the Central Committee of Catholic Action in Spain. Shortly before the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, he went to the University of Freiburg to study Catholic theology. On 28 July 1940 he received there the sacrament of Holy Orders. He returned in 1943 returned to Spain and worked until 1947 as a chaplain in the Diocese of Santander, before him, Pope Pius XII. in 1947 appointed Bishop of Málaga. He received his episcopal consecration on 30 June 1947, the Apostolic Nuncio to Spain and later Cardinal Gaetano Cicognani. In 1965 he was accepted as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sacro Cuore di Maria in the College of Cardinals. Ángel Herrera Oria died on 28 July 1968 in Madrid and was buried in the Cathedral of Malaga. In November 1995, the process of beatification was opened.
