Angel of Peace

The Angel of Peace is a monument in Munich's Bogenhausen. It is part of the Maximilian Park and point de vue at the eastern end of a line of sight forming Prinzregentenstraße. Isar side is slightly above the street level increased space with a dolphin fountain, in which a central fountain of four water-spouting, ridden by cherubs dolphins surrounded. Two staircases lead to an observation terrace. Here stands a 38 meter high column in Corinthian style, on whose head stands the six -meter-high statue of the Angel of Peace. It is a replica of the Nike of Naples, which is modeled including the Nike of Paionios and the Nike of Samothrace.

The Angel of Peace is reminiscent of the 25 peaceful years after the Franco-German war of 1870 /71. The monument with its small temple shows the portraits of the German Emperor Wilhelm I, Frederick III. , Wilhelm II, the Imperial Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and the generals, Helmuth von Moltke, Albrecht von Roon, Ludwig von der Tann, Jakob von Hartmann and Siegmund of Pranckh. In the hall of the temple are gold mosaics depicting allegories of war and peace, victory and blessing for the culture.

The foundation stone was laid on 10 May 1896, the unveiling ceremony was on 16 July 1899. Sculpture from leaf gilded bronze casting was a collaborative work of the artist Heinrich Düll, Georg Pezold and Max Heilmaier.

As in 1981 threatened to fall of the angel, he was taken, with significant damage emerged. After a restoration in 1983 he was put back in his seat, leg and both wings had been renewed. The position of the blade is compared with the original state steeper.

Europe Square

The place east of the Angel of Peace is called Europe Square. It is designed as spurious roundabout, the traffic flow is controlled by way signs and traffic lights. In its center a roundel exists to turn, open out into the surrounding (non- right of way ) roads. The square is surrounded by flower beds and trees. The course counts as one of the busiest in the city.
