Angels Fall First

Angels Fall First is the title of the debut album by the Finnish metal band Nightwish. It appeared in 1997 and differs from the other albums, especially by the frequent use of acoustic - electric guitar instead.

Formation

The precursor to the album was recorded in a self- directed by Tuomas Holopainen, Emppu Vuorinen and Tarja Turunen 1996 untitled demo. The music it had not much to do with the later style, as the instrumentation was limited in addition to the vocals on keyboard, piano and acoustic guitar. In the spring of 1997 met drummer Jukka Nevalainen joined the band Emppu Vuorinen also now switched to electric guitar. As a guest musician on the flute also Esa Lehtinen participated.

Again, on its own responsibility, the band in April 1997 in Huvikeskus studio in Kitee, the home of musician, sound engineer Tero Kinnunen with seven new songs. This material led to a contract with the label Spinefarm in the following month. Called for the debut album by one of the songs "Angels Fall First ", were additionally recorded four new songs in August under the same circumstances. In addition, mastering of the songs took place at Finnvox studios in Helsinki by Mika Jussila.

First the split single " The Carpenter " has been released ( with songs by Children of Bodom and Thy Serpent ) in the fall of 1997. The album was released in November on Spinefarm and gave the band a surprise hit when it debuted at number 31 of the Finnish album charts. This was out of the studio project a band that did her first concert in Kitee on the 31st December of the year.

In addition to the regular edition, limited to 500 copies " Limited Edition " was released. It contains seven tracks of the original recording session in April and has a different cover. In 2001 a re-release of the album as part of the 4CD box " Nightwish 1997-2001 ". More new editions were made partly with different bonus tracks. Published in 2007 Spinefarm a version which contained the song " A Return to the Sea" and the three pieces of the demo.

Cover

The album cover is a custom built by Garry Black Photography. It shows the full moon in the reddish evening sky and the silhouette of a tree on a landscape. To date it is the only cover of the band, which consists exclusively of a photo. The to-find inside band photo was taken by Toni Harkonen.

The Carpenter

" The Carpenter " was released as a split single with " Red Light In My Eyes, Part II" by Children of Bodom and "Only Dust Moves ..." by Thy Serpent and reached number 8 in the singles chart in Finland.

Meanings of individual songs

  • Elvenpath is inspired by JRR Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings and other fairy tales and legends and also contains audio material of the Lord of the Rings film of 1978.
